Mudroom: where the weather stops, starting at the hooks
The mudroom is where the weather stops. Everything the house wants to keep outside arrives here first: wet boots, muddy paws, dripping umbrellas, the dog towel that never quite dries, and the coat wall that grows a layer every October. Start at the hooks, because almost everything lying on the mudroom floor is there for one reason, which is that the wall above it ran out of room.

The kit for the whole mudroom

- Scraper and absorbent entry mat set Stop grit and water at the threshold in two stages, one mat outside to scrape and one inside to soak, in the Shine, Safety and Sustain passes. Grit is what wears this room out, and you beat it with three layers at the threshold: a stiff bristle mat outside to scrape, an absorbent mat inside to soak, and a lipped tray for anything still dripping. Shake the mats and rinse the tray on the same day, because grit ground underfoot sands the finish off a floor.
- The trap. The mudroom is one room from the door, so it quietly becomes the holding bay for the whole house: the returns, the charity bag, the football kit for a season that finished in May. Lidded boxes make this worse, because a lid hides the drift. Open bins and bare hooks keep the truth visible.
