Room
Mudroom
The mudroom is where the weather stops. Everything the house wants to keep outside arrives here first: wet boots, muddy paws, dripping umbrellas, the dog towel that never quite dries, and the coat wall that grows a layer every October. Start at the hooks, because almost everything lying on the mudroom floor is there for one reason, which is that the wall above it ran out of room.
The 6 micro zones, in working order
A micro zone is one session, not a whole day. Finish one before you start the next.
- The Family Hook Zone (45-75 min)
Holds the coats and bags that leave in the morning and come back the same evening. - The Bench and Transition Surface (15-30 min)
Somewhere to sit while you deal with your footwear, and a brief stop for things genuinely on their way out of the house. - The Shoe and Boot Storage (30-45 min)
Holds the footwear actually being worn this season, and gives wet pairs somewhere to drain without soaking the floor. - The Pet Station (15-30 min)
Everything the animal needs to get out of the door, and everything you need when it comes back through it filthy. - The Seasonal Outdoor Gear (30-45 min)
Holds the small weather items the family grabs on the way out, for the season you are actually in. - The Cleaning and Utility Zone (30-45 min)
The tools that keep the entry floor and the door mats fit to walk on, kept where the mess actually lands.
For this room
- {'label': 'Where to start', 'text': 'Do the hook wall before anything else, and do it with the family standing there so every coat gets handed to its owner rather than judged by you. Once each person has a named column at their own reach, the boots, bags and bins underneath stop migrating onto the floor.'}
- {'label': 'Cleaning note', 'text': 'Grit is what wears this room out, and you beat it with three layers at the threshold: a stiff bristle mat outside to scrape, an absorbent mat inside to soak, and a lipped tray for anything still dripping. Shake the mats and rinse the tray on the same day, because grit ground underfoot sands the finish off a floor.'}
- {'label': 'The trap', 'text': 'The mudroom is one room from the door, so it quietly becomes the holding bay for the whole house: the returns, the charity bag, the football kit for a season that finished in May. Lidded boxes make this worse, because a lid hides the drift. Open bins and bare hooks keep the truth visible.'}
