Room

Nursery: safety first, built for one hand working at 2 a.m.

The nursery is the room where safety outranks everything else, and where the person using it is usually exhausted and working one-handed. Every standard here is built for that person at 2 a.m.: a bare crib, supplies inside one arm's sweep of the changing pad, cords shortened and heavy cartons moved off the shelf above the crib so nobody has to keep an eye on them. Start with the crib, because it is the quickest zone in the room and the one where getting it wrong matters most.

The whole nursery as what it actually is: six small zones, with safety running through every one. You never face the whole room at two in the morning. You face the crib, or the changing pad, one at a time, each with a clear finish. Start with the crib. Drawn for the Nursery chapter of the book, not a photograph of a real home.

The 6 micro zones

A micro zone is one session, not a whole day. Finish one before you start the next.

Added together, the 6 sessions below come to about 3 to 4.5 hours for the whole nursery. That is not one long day. Each session finishes on its own, so stopping after the first still leaves the room better than it was.

Start here. Empty the crib before you touch anything else in the room. It is one armful of work, and the standard is a number you cannot negotiate down: one fitted sheet, and nothing else over the rail.

The 6 micro zones of the nursery. Each one is a session that finishes on its own.
  1. The Crib and Sleep Zone (15-30 min)
The one surface in the house where your baby is left alone, which is why it holds a fitted sheet and nothing more.
  2. The Changing Station (30-45 min)
A pad you can work at with one hand staying on your baby the entire time.
  3. The Baby Clothing Zone (45-75 min)
Holds the sizes your baby fits this month and moves everything else out of the house fast.
  4. The Feeding Station (30-45 min)
Puts a clean assembled bottle or a full set of pump parts into your hands at 2 a.m. without a single decision.
  5. The Diaper and Care Backstock (30-45 min)
Holds the reserve that feeds the changing station, in the sizes your baby is about to need rather than the ones on offer.
  6. The Books and Quiet Play Zone (15-30 min)
A short, calm set of things your baby can reach and choose without you handing anything over.

Illustrations of each zone finished. Not photographs of real homes.

The kit for the whole nursery

Every zone below draws from this. These are types of thing, not brands, and anything you already own that does the job is the right one to use. Each zone page names the smaller list that zone actually needs.

The nursery deck

The same zones as a deck of 66 cards you can read here or print: what each zone is for, the frictions people actually report in it, the root cause behind each one, and the timed action that clears it. Free, no account. Read the nursery deck.

The whole Nursery on cards you can carry

Everything above is free and stays free. The Nursery Pack puts these 6 micro zones on 36 printable cards, nine to a page, plus the standards sheet for the room. It is for the part where you are stood in here with wet hands and would rather not be holding a phone.

The Nursery on its own is 9 dollars for 36 cards. All 114 micro zones is 19 dollars for 684, which is more cards for the money by a wide margin. The room pack is here because you came for the nursery, not for the house.

Or have somebody run it with you. A one hour virtual consult is 250 dollars: we work out what the nursery is supposed to do, what is stopping it and which zone to start on, and you keep a written plan.
