Safety, the fourth S
Why tidy is not the same as safe
A zone can pass every test that Sort, Straighten and Shine apply and still hurt someone. The medicine sits behind a closed door, but the door is at a toddler's eye level. The charger sits neatly on the nightstand, but it is tucked under the blanket where the heat has nowhere to go. Nothing about that is untidy. All of it is unsafe, and organizing did not catch it because organizing was never the check that catches it.
The short answer. Unsafe placement is a root cause of its own, separate from clutter, excess, or no assigned home. It means an item sits within reach of a hazard, or is itself a hazard within reach, regardless of how organized the zone around it is. Sort, Straighten and Shine make a space easier to use. Only the Safety pass asks whether it is also safe, and it has to be worked on purpose, because none of the other three steps ask that question for you.
Organized and safe are two different tests
Sort asks what stays. Straighten asks where it lives. Shine asks whether it is clean. All three questions can be answered well in a zone that still fails a fourth, unrelated question: can anything in here hurt someone. A drawer can be sorted down to exactly what belongs, arranged so the most used item is closest to hand, and wiped clean, and still hold a loose battery pack that is swollen at the seam. None of the first three steps would ever notice, because none of them were checking for that.
This is why Safety is its own step in the method rather than a note attached to Straighten. A step that only gets checked as a side effect of another step gets checked inconsistently, by whoever happens to be paying attention that day. A step with its own pass, worked every time in the same order, gets checked whether or not anyone remembers to think about it.
The four shapes unsafe placement takes
Almost every household hazard reduces to one of four patterns. Knowing the pattern makes it faster to spot, because you stop looking for danger in general and start looking for one specific thing.
- Height. Something heavy stored above a place people stand, reach, or sleep. A box on a high shelf is fine until it is directly over a bed, a doorway, or a spot where someone will stretch up on their toes to reach something else.
- Reach. Something hazardous stored at the exact height a small child's hand finds first, usually because that height is also where an adult's hand naturally puts things away. A closed cabinet door is not the same protection as a latch.
- Heat and power. A device that generates heat while covered, crowded, or resting on soft fabric that cannot carry the heat away, or an outlet asked to carry more than it was built for.
- Sightline and path. A step, a cord, or an edge that is only dangerous because it is hard to see, usually in low light or on a route people walk without looking down.
The three step check
- Crouch to the shortest person's height. Get down to where the shortest regular user of the room actually sees the world, and look at what sits at that eye level and within an arm's reach. Most hazards are not hidden. They are simply stored at a height nobody over four feet tall ever looks at closely.
- Put a hand on every device that stays powered. Anything that charges, heats, or stays plugged in gets touched, not glanced at. A pack that is too hot to hold, swollen at the seam, or buried under fabric is a stop now problem, not a note for later.
- Ask what happens if it fails, not whether it looks messy. A stack of bins looks tidy right up until the bottom one buckles. The question that finds the real risk is not does this look organized, it is what happens the day this tips, sparks, or leaks, and can someone reach it before that day comes.
Five zones built around exactly this

- The crib and sleep zone treats any cord reachable from inside the rails, a blind cord, a lamp flex, a monitor cable, as a hazard that comes down or gets shortened the same day it is found, not scheduled for later.
None of those five zones needed to be cluttered for the hazard to exist. All five needed someone to run the fourth check on purpose.
Where this fits in the six steps
Safety sits fourth for a reason that has nothing to do with alphabetical convenience. The first three steps are what make a hazard visible in the first place: Sort empties the space so you can see what is actually in it, Straighten arranges it so you are looking at each item rather than a pile, and Shine cleans it, which is the one moment your hands and eyes pass over every surface slowly. By the time Safety runs, the zone is finally honest enough to show you what was there the whole time. Run Safety before those three and you are inspecting a space still full of clutter, and most hazards hide inside clutter rather than in an emptied, arranged one.

What does unsafe placement mean as a root cause?
It means an item sits somewhere that can hurt someone, whether or not the zone around it is tidy. A bottle of drain cleaner behind a closed cabinet door is still at toddler height. A tightly coiled charging cable is still under a cushion where it cannot lose heat. Organizing decides where things live for convenience.
