The deck, six zones

The Primary Bedroom Deck

66 cards: the Manual's real six Primary Bedroom zones, the frictions each one causes, the 14 root causes underneath, the actions that fix them, and the standard each zone keeps. Typeset and free. No illustrations yet, so every card reads as text, not a photograph.

Prefer paper? This page's own print layout lays the fronts out at true card size. Use your browser's print dialog.

This is the first Primary Bedroom deck on the site: built straight from the same Manual as the Kitchen, Entryway, Laundry Room, Home Office, Primary Bathroom, Garage, Stair Landing, Pantry, Hall Closet, Dining Room, Guest Bedroom, Guest Bathroom, Family Room, Living Room, Mudroom, Nursery and Kids Bedroom decks, with the same rules.

Built from the Manual, not around it

Six zones, real diagnosis, nothing invented

This is the only room in the house whose job is to help you stop. Every object in it either supports sleep or competes with it, and the ones that compete arrive quietly: the charger, the chair that collects worn jeans, the box of shoes that did not fit. Start at your own nightstand, because it is small and you will see the difference from the pillow that same night, and save the closet for a morning when you are fresh.

Every card here is real: written from the same source as the Manual and the zone pages, gated so a root cause with no friction pointing at it, or an action nobody's problem needs, cannot ship. None of it is generated placeholder copy. What is missing is photography, which this deck does not pretend to have. A family-coloured panel and the card's own symbol stand where a photograph will eventually go.

66 cards, seven kinds

One zone, one friction, one cause, one fix, one standard

A Zone card names the place. Friction cards say what a household actually complains about there. Each friction points at a Root Cause, and each cause names the Action that fixes it. A Standard card is what you write down and keep. Event cards are the days that test whether it held.

THE PRIMARY BEDROOM

SIX ZONES. START WITH YOUR OWN NIGHTSTAND TONIGHT.

●○○○○

The primary bedroom is the only room in the house whose job is to help you stop. This card is the map and the order.

How it works

Start here. PRZ-002 Nightstand Left. Do your own nightstand tonight, in one sitting. It is the smallest zone in the room and the one you look at last thing and first thing, so it shows you the change twice before you touch anything bigger.

The six zones, in order

  1. PRZ-001 Bed and Bedding Zone
  2. PRZ-002 Nightstand Left
  3. PRZ-003 Nightstand Right
  4. PRZ-004 Dresser Top
  5. PRZ-005 Dresser Drawers
  6. PRZ-006 Primary Closet

How to play

  1. Deal the six ZONE cards face up. Pick the one that is annoying you today, or take the one this card says to start at.
  2. Lay out that zone's three FRICTION cards. Keep the ones that are true in your bedroom. Put the rest back.
  3. Turn a friction card over and pick the answer that is true. It names a ROOT CAUSE.
  4. The root cause card names the ACTION cards that fix that cause. Pick the one that matches the time you actually have: fifteen or thirty minutes.
  5. Do it standing up, with the card in your hand.
  6. Read the victory condition out loud. If it is not true yet, you are not finished, and that is the whole scoring system.
  7. Fill in the zone's STANDARD card with a pen and put it where the zone is.
  8. Draw an EVENT card when an ordinary hard day happens, and see whether the standard held.

Players. 1 to 2. With a shared bed, the Nightstand Right zone belongs to the other sleeper: you may clean it, not cull it. Let the difference between the two nightstands make the argument, not a conversation.

Safety first. Do PRA-013 The Full Bedroom Hazard Walk before any rebuild. It takes thirty minutes and covers every cord reachable from the walking strip, the unanchored dresser, and the medication in either nightstand drawer.

Bed and Bedding Zone

ZonePRZ-001

BED AND BEDDING ZONE

Zone 1 of 6 · Primary Bedroom

TWO SHEET SETS. ONE ON, ONE CLEAN. NOTHING ELSE ON THE SHELF.

●●○○○

The bed and the linens on it have one job, which is to get you through the night without waking up.

How it works

Done looks like: Bed made the same way every morning: fitted sheet, flat sheet or duvet, two sleeping pillows per person, one throw folded at the foot. Two complete sheet sets for this bed, one on it and one folded on the linen shelf. Under the bed holds either nothing or two labelled flat bins, and you can walk from either side of the bed to the door without stepping over anything.

Six things to check

  1. A made bed holding a fitted sheet, a flat sheet or duvet, and two sleeping pillows per person
  2. One throw folded at the foot of the bed
  3. Two complete sheet sets for this bed, one on it and one folded on the linen shelf
  4. Under the bed holding either nothing or two labelled flat bins
  5. A clear floor on both sides of the bed all the way to the door
  6. A headboard shelf holding nothing but the lamp

Fall Storage bins, shoes and a charging cable in the strip of floor between the bed and the door are what your foot finds at three in the morning on the way to the bathroom. Keep that strip bare.

Fall, cut, or crush Framed pictures, a speaker or a stack of books on a headboard ledge or hung on the wall above the pillows sit directly over a sleeping head. Move them, or fix them into the wall properly.

The third sheet set. You are holding four or five sets because one was a wedding gift, one is new but scratchy, and one is the good set you have never slept on. Two per bed is the honest number: one on, one clean. Keep a third only if a child or a pet actually sleeps here and you have stripped this bed at two in the morning within the last year. Anything past three is a set you wash, fold, and never put on a bed. And the good one goes on tonight, because a sheet saved for an occasion is a sheet nobody ever uses.

What it uses

  • Compact vacuum with attachments
  • Color-coded microfiber cloth set
  • Neutral pH multi-surface cleaner
  • Portable cleaning caddy
  • Laundry detergent for the stripped bedding

Three frictions, then the fix

FrictionPRF-001

THREE OR MORE SHEET SETS ARE STACKED ON THE LINEN SHELF

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“There are three or more sheet sets stacked on the linen shelf, including the good set you have never actually put on the bed.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. One was a wedding gift and letting it go feels like refusing the person who gave it → SENTIMENTAL ATTACHMENT
  2. The honest number is one on, one clean, but nobody has ever said that out loud as the rule → MISSING STANDARD
  3. A set that has stood on the shelf that long stops registering as more than the bed actually needs → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-002

A BIN, SHOES, OR A CABLE SIT IN THE FLOOR STRIP BETWEEN THE BED AND THE DOOR

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“There is a storage bin, a pair of shoes, or a charging cable sitting in the strip of floor between the bed and the door.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. The cable has nowhere else it is supposed to live once it reaches this side of the room → NO ASSIGNED HOME
  2. It is what your foot finds at three in the morning, and that risk outranks the two seconds it takes to leave it there → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  3. Nothing marks the moment to clear that strip, so it only gets checked once someone trips → MISSING TRIGGER

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-003

BOOKS, A SPEAKER, OR A FRAMED PICTURE SIT ON THE SHELF ABOVE THE PILLOWS

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“A stack of books, a speaker, or a framed picture sits on a headboard shelf directly above the pillows.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. It is weight sitting right over a sleeping head, and that outranks how it looks on the shelf → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  2. Nobody has decided the shelf above the pillows is off limits to anything but the lamp → MISSING STANDARD
  3. It has been up there since before anyone thought about what is underneath it, so the height stopped reading as a hazard → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

ActionPRA-001

CLEAR THE FLOOR STRIP AND THE HEADBOARD SHELF

15 MINUTES. 1.

●●○○○

Clear the floor strip between the bed and the door, and move any headboard-shelf item that is not the lamp off the shelf.

How it works

A bin, a shoe, or a cable in the walking strip is what your foot finds at three in the morning, and weight over the pillows on an unmarked shelf is a fall risk you sleep under every night.

You need

  • a laundry basket
  • the linen shelf

Steps

  1. Clear the floor strip between the bed and the door of anything sitting on it, and move any headboard-shelf item that is not the lamp off the shelf.
  2. Carry each item to where it actually belongs rather than setting it down again somewhere else in the room.

Victory. The floor strip between the bed and the door is bare, and the headboard shelf above the pillows holds only the lamp.

SET THE SHEET COUNT AND MOVE THIS BED'S LINEN TO ITS OWN SPACE

30 MINUTES. 1.

●●●○○

Pull the linen shelf down to two sheet sets for this bed and separate them from guest and kid linens.

How it works

A shelf holding four or five sets for one bed is not spare capacity, it is a decision nobody has made yet, and mixing this bed's sets with other beds' linen means digging every time you strip it.

You need

  • a donation bag or rag bin
  • a marker for the shelf

Steps

  1. Count every sheet set for this bed on the linen shelf. Keep two: one on the bed, one clean. A third stays only if a child or a pet actually sleeps here and you have stripped this bed at two in the morning within the last year.
  2. Move whatever is left, worn thin, pilled, or simply extra, out as rag or textile recycling, and separate this bed's own two sets from any guest doubles or kid singles sharing the same shelf.

Victory. The linen shelf holds exactly two sheet sets for this bed, set apart from any guest or kid linen sharing the shelf.

This is a write on card. Fill it in with a pen, in your own words if the printed sentence is not yours, and put it where the zone is. A standard nobody signed is a preference.

Ninety seconds, if that is what you have

  • Run the vacuum crevice tool down the gap where dust and hair pack against the wall behind the headboard.
  • Wipe along the top of the bed frame rails and down the legs, getting the inner faces of the slats you never see once the mattress is back down.
  • Slide a pillowcase over each still fan blade, close it and pull back so the dust comes off inside the case, then wipe each blade dry.

NIGHTSTAND LEFT

Zone 2 of 6 · Primary Bedroom

FIVE THINGS OR FEWER. COUNTABLE FROM THE DOORWAY.

●○○○○

This is your side, and it holds only what you reach for between getting into bed and falling asleep.

How it works

Done looks like: On top: lamp, a lidded bottle or a coaster, one book, and a small dish holding your glasses. Five things or fewer, with no cable crossing the surface. The drawer has three divided sections with room left in each, and you can name what is in each one without opening it.

Six things to check

  1. A lamp, a lidded bottle or coaster, one book, and a small dish holding glasses, all on top
  2. Five things or fewer on the top, countable from the doorway
  3. No cable crossing the top surface
  4. A drawer with three divided sections, each with room left in it
  5. The lamp and clock cords clipped down the back leg
  6. The power strip moved off the top and onto the floor behind the nightstand

Water and electricity An open glass of water sitting beside a lamp base, a charger and a power strip on one small top is a single knocked elbow away from a problem. Put a lid on the water or move the power off the top.

Burn or fire A lit candle on a nightstand sits level with the bedding and right where your sleeve passes when you reach for the lamp. If you want one burning at night, it burns on the dresser.

The phone charger. You know the phone should not sleep here, and you have kept it because it is your alarm. That is one job, and a nine pound clock does it. Buy the clock, move the charger to the dresser across the room, and give the phone a landing spot you have to stand up to reach. If you will not commit to that, then commit to the honest version instead: the charger stays, the phone lies face down, and something else comes off the top so you are still at five. What you cannot keep doing is calling the current arrangement temporary.

What it uses

  • Neutral pH multi-surface cleaner
  • Compact vacuum with attachments
  • Color-coded microfiber cloth set
  • Portable cleaning caddy

Three frictions, then the fix

FrictionPRF-004

THE PHONE CHARGES ON THE NIGHTSTAND TOP AND DOUBLES AS THE ALARM

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“The phone is charging on the nightstand top and doubles as your alarm clock.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. There is never a specific moment, a birthday or a new year, that turns buying the clock into something that actually happens → MISSING TRIGGER
  2. The charger has no other assigned spot in the room, so it stayed exactly where it was first plugged in → NO ASSIGNED HOME
  3. It has been the alarm for so long that calling the arrangement temporary does not feel dishonest anymore → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-005

AN OPEN GLASS OF WATER SITS ON THE SAME TOP AS THE LAMP AND A POWER STRIP

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“There is an open glass of water sitting on the same small top as the lamp and a power strip.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. It is a single knocked elbow from water and electricity meeting, and that outranks the convenience of a lidless glass → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  2. The power strip has never had anywhere else on this nightstand to go besides the top → NO ASSIGNED HOME
  3. Nobody set the rule that water needs a lid near this outlet, so it is whoever's habit wins that night → MISSING STANDARD

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-006

THE DRAWER HOLDS AN OLD CHARGER, A DEAD PEN, AND UNREAD BOOKS

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“The drawer holds a charger for a phone you do not own anymore, a dead pen, and a couple of books you started months ago.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. None of it has been used in months, but nothing has forced the drawer to prove it is still earning its spot → EXCESS
  2. Once it is stirred into the pile you cannot see it without digging, so it never surfaces to be judged → POOR VISIBILITY
  3. Nobody clears it out on any schedule, so it only gets sorted whenever someone happens to dump the drawer on the bed → MISSING TRIGGER

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

ActionPRA-003

CLEAR THE TOP TO FIVE AND EMPTY THE DRAWER

15 MINUTES. 1.

●●○○○

Empty the top down to five items and empty the drawer onto the bed, clearing out what no longer earns its spot.

How it works

A dead charger and a book you are not reading this week cost nothing to keep and everything to dig through the one time you actually need the drawer.

You need

  • a bin
  • the bookshelf

Steps

  1. Empty the top down to five items and empty the drawer onto the bed: the dead pen, the chargers for phones you do not own, and any book you have not picked up this week go straight to the shelf or the bin.
  2. Divide the drawer so glasses, lip balm and earplugs each sit in their own section instead of sliding into one heap.

Victory. The nightstand top holds five things or fewer with no cable crossing it, and the drawer holds only what you would actually reach for tonight.

30 MINUTES. 1.

●●●○○

Move the power strip off the nightstand top, commit to a lidded drink at the bedside, and give the phone charger a charging spot that is not beside your pillow.

How it works

Water and a power strip sharing one small surface is a single knocked elbow from a real problem, and a phone doubling as your alarm is the reason it never actually leaves the bedside.

You need

  • a bottle with a lid
  • a nine-dollar alarm clock

Steps

  1. Move the power strip off the nightstand top and onto the floor behind it, and if you drink in bed, switch to a bottle with a lid.
  2. Buy the cheap alarm clock, move the phone charger to the dresser across the room, and give the phone a landing spot you have to stand up to reach; if you will not commit to that, keep the charger but lay the phone face down and drop one other item so the top still counts to five.

Victory. The power strip is off the top and on the floor behind the nightstand, and the phone charger has either moved to the dresser or the phone lies face down with the top still counting to five.

NIGHTSTAND RIGHT

Zone 3 of 6 · Primary Bedroom

YOU CLEAN. THEY CULL. MEDICATION IS THE ONE EXCEPTION.

●●○○○

This is the other sleeper's side, and it is the one zone in this room that is not yours to decide about.

How it works

Done looks like: The top is clear enough to set a mug down without moving anything first, the lamp cord runs behind the leg rather than across the floor beside the bed, and any medication in the drawer is in date, capped, and closed away from a child or a dog who can climb onto this bed.

Six things to check

  1. A top clear enough to set a mug down without moving anything first
  2. The lamp cord running behind the leg, not across the floor beside the bed
  3. Medication in the drawer capped and in date
  4. Medication closed away from a child or a dog that can climb onto the bed
  5. The same item count on this top as the other nightstand
  6. A floor beside this nightstand kept clear, the same as the other side

Poison, choke, or strangle Sleep aids, painkillers and prescription bottles loose in an open bedside drawer sit at exactly the height a toddler or a dog reaches from the mattress. Cap them and shut them into a box.

Fall A lamp cord crossing the walking strip on this side catches a foot in a dark room. Run it down behind the leg and along the wall.

Whose things you are allowed to throw away. You want to fix this side because you can see it from yours, and every argument about tidiness in a shared bedroom starts right here. The rule that settles it: you clean, they cull. You may wipe, vacuum and straighten anything on this side, and you may not remove a single object from it. Finish your own nightstand to the standard, leave theirs untouched, and let the difference between the two tops be the entire argument you make. If they never change a thing, you have still fixed half the room and kept the marriage. The one item you can raise out loud is the out of date medication, because that is a safety question and not a taste question.

MEDICATION SITS LOOSE IN THE OPEN DRAWER ON THIS SIDE

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“There is medication, capped or not, sitting loose in the open drawer on this side.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. It is a poisoning risk at exactly the height a toddler or a dog reaches from the mattress, and that is worth raising even though the rest of the drawer is not yours to touch → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  2. Nobody has checked the dates together in a while, so a bottle ages out of use unnoticed → POOR REPLENISHMENT
  3. It has been in that drawer long enough that neither of you registers it as open and unsecured anymore → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-008

THE LAMP CORD ON THIS SIDE RUNS LOOSE ACROSS THE FLOOR

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“The lamp cord on this side runs loose across the floor instead of behind the leg.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. It crosses the exact strip you both walk in the dark, and that is a real trip risk ahead of how it looks → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  2. This side's cord was never run behind the leg the way the other side's was, so the shared standard stopped at one nightstand → MISSING STANDARD
  3. The floor beside this side is not yours to rearrange, so a hazard sitting in shared space does not get fixed because it is not your side → UNCLEAR OWNERSHIP

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

FrictionPRF-009

THE TWO NIGHTSTAND TOPS HOLD DIFFERENT NUMBERS OF THINGS

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

“The two nightstand tops are holding different numbers of things, one cluttered, one clear.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. One person tidied the other's side once, and it started an argument that has made both of you avoid the topic since → CONFLICTING USERS
  2. There is no agreed number for this side the way there is for the other, so clear means something different to each of you → MISSING STANDARD
  3. Whoever notices the gap first assumes it is the other person's job to close it → UNCLEAR OWNERSHIP

Pick the answer that is true in your bedroom, then turn to that root cause card. If two are true, take the one you could change this week.

CHECK THE MEDICATION AND RUN THE CORD BEHIND THE LEG

15 MINUTES. 1 TO 2.

●●○○○

Check the medication dates together, cap and close away anything loose, and run the lamp cord behind the leg on this side to match the other.

How it works

Sleep aids and painkillers loose in an open bedside drawer sit at exactly the height a toddler or a dog reaches from the mattress, and this is the one thing worth raising even though the rest of the drawer is not yours to touch.

You need

  • a closed box for medication
  • cable clips

Steps

  1. Check the medication dates together right now: cap anything loose, and if a child or a dog gets onto this bed, move it into a closed box. Then run the lamp cord behind the leg on this side to match the other.
  2. Confirm both changes hold before you leave the room: the drawer closed, the cord out of the walking path.

AGREE THE SHARED STANDARD AND CLOSE THE COUNT GAP

30 MINUTES. 1 TO 2.

●●●○○

Agree out loud that the cord rule and the item count apply to both nightstands equally, then bring this side's count level with the other.

How it works

Every argument about tidiness in a shared bedroom starts with one person fixing the side that is not theirs to fix; matching the standard instead of the contents settles it without either of you touching the other's drawer.

You need

  • nothing, this is a conversation

Steps

  1. Say out loud, together, that the cord-behind-the-leg rule and the shared item count apply to both nightstands, not just the one that already meets it.
  2. Whoever's top is running high brings their own count down to match the other's; you may wipe and vacuum this side, but the choice of what stays in the drawer is theirs alone to make.

DRESSER TOP

ONE TRAY. EVERYTHING FROM YOUR POCKETS LANDS INSIDE IT.

●●○○○

This is where your pockets land at the end of the day and where tomorrow's watch and rings wait for you.

How it works

Done looks like: One valet tray holding keys, wallet, watch and rings, with nothing sitting outside it. Fragrance bottles grouped on a small dish, set back from the front edge. No folded laundry, no receipts, no loose coins on the wood. An anti-tip strap runs from the back of the dresser into the wall.

Six things to check

  1. One valet tray holding keys, wallet, watch and rings, with nothing sitting outside it
  2. Fragrance bottles grouped on a small dish, set back from the front edge
  3. No folded laundry resting on the dresser top
  4. No receipts or loose coins on the bare wood
  5. An anti-tip strap running from the back of the dresser into the wall
  6. A dresser top with nothing else on the bare wood besides the tray and the dish

Fall, cut, or crush An unstrapped tall dresser tips forward the moment a loaded drawer is open and weight goes on it, and it is heavy enough to pin a child underneath. Strap it into a stud and keep the heaviest clothes in the bottom drawers.

Fall, cut, or crush Glass fragrance bottles parked on the front edge break into small pieces on a hard floor beside a bed you walk to barefoot. Set them back and group them on a dish.

The perfume you were given. There are three or four bottles standing up here and you wear one of them. The others were gifts, or they were expensive, or they were who you were five years ago. Fragrance turns. A bottle that has stood open for years smells sharper and flatter than the one you were handed, and one you have not reached for in a full year will not be reached for now. Keep the one you wear and the one you honestly alternate to. The rest go, and the guilt goes with them, because whoever gave it to you wanted you to smell good, not to store glass. The same test sorts the jewellery: worn in the last year stays in the tray, loved but unworn goes to a box in the closet, neither worn nor loved leaves the house.

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. The tray is already full, so the honest fix is thinning the keyring or moving a ring to the jewellery box, not starting a second pile → INSUFFICIENT CAPACITY
  2. Loose change and receipts have no assigned home of their own once they leave your pocket → NO ASSIGNED HOME
  3. One receipt on bare wood does not look like much on its own, which is exactly how a second pile starts → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

“The dresser is not strapped to the wall, and a drawer left open sits low enough for a child to lean on.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

SWEEP THE TOP DOWN TO THE TRAY AND THE DISH

15 MINUTES. 1.

●●○○○

Sweep the dresser top down to just the valet tray and the fragrance dish, sorting the pocket sediment as you go.

How it works

Loose change, a receipt, and a snapped chain do not improve by sitting on the wood, they just start the second pile that spreads from there.

You need

  • a jar for change
  • a small repair bag

Steps

  1. Sweep the dresser top down to just the valet tray and the fragrance dish: pocket sediment (change, receipts, stray jewellery) gets sorted into a jar, the bin, or the repair bag, and any bottle you have not reached for in a year comes off entirely.
  2. Move any jewellery you love but never wear into a box in the closet rather than back onto the top.

Victory. The dresser top holds only the valet tray and a small dish of fragrance bottles, and nothing loose sits on the bare wood.

How it works

An unstrapped tall dresser tips forward the moment a loaded drawer is open and a child leans on it, and a shelf of unworn fragrance is glass sitting at exactly that same front edge.

You need

  • an anti-tip strap
  • a screwdriver

Steps

  1. Fit an anti-tip strap into a stud, and check the fixing holds when you lean on an open drawer.
  2. Test every fragrance bottle against the last year: keep the one you wear and the one you honestly alternate to, and let the rest go along with the guilt.

Dresser Drawers

ZonePRZ-005

DRESSER DRAWERS

Zone 5 of 6 · Primary Bedroom

ONE CATEGORY PER DRAWER. A HAND'S WIDTH OF SPACE LEFT.

●●●○○

These drawers hold the folded clothes you wear this season, split into categories you can find without digging.

How it works

Done looks like: Each drawer holds one category: underwear and socks, sleepwear, t-shirts, workout clothes. Everything folded to stand upright so you read the whole drawer from above when it opens. A hand's width of free space in each drawer, and every drawer slides shut without you pressing anything down first.

Six things to check

  1. Each drawer holding one category: underwear and socks, sleepwear, t-shirts, workout clothes
  2. Clothes folded to stand upright, readable from above when the drawer opens
  3. A hand's width of free space in each drawer
  4. Every drawer sliding shut without being pressed down
  5. The heaviest categories, jeans and knitwear, in the bottom drawers
  6. Mothballs or cedar blocks sealed inside a mesh bag rather than rolling loose

Fall, cut, or crush Two heavy drawers open at once, or a child climbing the open drawers like steps, is how a chest of drawers comes down on someone. One drawer at a time, heaviest clothes lowest, anti-tip strap fitted.

Poison, choke, or strangle Mothballs and cedar blocks rolling loose in a sock drawer look like sweets to a toddler standing at the open bottom drawer. Put them in a mesh bag hung at the back, or leave them out.

The size you are not right now. Two of these drawers are part filled with clothes that do not fit today, so every morning starts with a small unpleasant reminder instead of a clean choice. Take them out of the bedroom entirely. One box, not two, today's date written on the lid, stored somewhere else in the house. If that box is still sealed a year from now it leaves sealed, and you do not look inside, because looking is how it all comes back. These drawers dress the body you have this morning. That is not giving up on anything. It is refusing to open a drawer and be told off by it every day.

“A drawer needs a shove or a press-down to close, and it is the one holding workout tops or t-shirts.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. You own more of that category than you actually wear, six workout tops when you wear two → EXCESS

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. Loose in an open drawer, they look like candy to a toddler standing at drawer height, and that outranks the moth protection → SAFETY CONSTRAINT

How it works

You need

  • a donation bag

Steps

  1. Open the drawer that needs a shove to close and pull one full category's worth of overflow out right now: extra workout tops, a wrong-size stack, or loose mothballs, whichever is worst.
  2. Check that the drawer now closes without being pressed down before you move on.

You need

  • a box and a marker

PRIMARY CLOSET

Zone 6 of 6 · Primary Bedroom

TWO FINGERS OF SPACE. ONE IN, ONE OUT.

●●●●○

The closet holds the clothes you actually wear this season, visible and reachable in one look.

How it works

Done looks like: One hanger style throughout, grouped by type and then by shade, every hook facing the same way. Shoes in pairs on a rack instead of a floor heap, bags standing upright on the shelf, belts on one hook. Two fingers of space between hanging items, a bare stretch of rod at one end, and floor you can stand on.

Six things to check

  1. One hanger style throughout, every hook facing the same way
  2. Garments grouped by type and then by shade
  3. Shoes in pairs on a rack, not heaped on the floor
  4. Bags standing upright on the shelf, belts on one hook
  5. Two fingers of space between hanging items, and a bare stretch of rod at one end
  6. A clear closet floor you can stand on

Fall, cut, or crush A rod loaded end to end with winter coats can tear its brackets out of plasterboard and bring the whole rail, and everything on it, down on you. Anchor into a stud and stop hanging past two fingers of space.

Fall A heap of shoes and bags across the closet floor is what you step onto half awake in an unlit room. Get the floor bare and the shoes onto a rack in pairs.

The expensive mistake. There is one thing hanging in here that cost real money and does not fit your life: the suit for the job you left, the coat that is beautiful and far too warm, the shoes that turn on you after twenty minutes. You keep it because letting it go makes the money real. The money is already gone. It left the day you bought it, and keeping the garment does not bring back a penny of it; it just takes a hanger you need and gives you a small flinch every time you slide past. Set one deadline. Photograph it tonight, list it for sale, and if it has not sold in thirty days it goes to the charity shop without another conversation. The lesson is worth keeping. The garment is not.

“There is a wire hanger or a plastic dry-cleaner sheath still on a garment on the rod.”

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. The dry cleaner sends them home and nothing has ever swapped them out for the one hanger style the rest of the closet uses → MISSING STANDARD
  2. The plastic sheath is a real suffocation risk if a small child gets in here, and that outranks leaving it on for now → SAFETY CONSTRAINT
  3. It blends into a rod that is this full, so a wire hanger among dozens of matching ones does not stand out anymore → PERCEPTUAL BLINDNESS

How it works

  2. There is no deadline attached to it, photograph it, list it, thirty days, so someday never actually arrives → UNRESOLVED DECISION

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. THEN WHY.

●○○○○

How it works

Why does this happen here?

  1. The rod is carrying more than the two-finger standard allows, so one in one out has stopped happening → EXCESS
  2. Winter coats and heavy knits that should have moved to the labelled bin for the off season never actually left the rod → WRONG LOCATION
  3. The overloaded rod is putting real weight on brackets only ever meant to hold what one season needs, and it can tear out of the plasterboard while you are reaching in underneath → SAFETY CONSTRAINT

How it works

A thin dry-cleaning bag clinging to a face is a real suffocation risk if a small child plays in here, and a wire hanger among matching ones is the first sign the one-hanger rule has slipped.

You need

  • a bin bag

Steps

  1. Walk the rod and pull every wire hanger and plastic dry-cleaner sheath off the garments right now, and bag them for the bin.

How it works

You need

  • a screwdriver

Steps

  1. Check the floor strip beside the bed and both nightstands for any cord running loose across it, and clip or reroute each one behind a leg.

THE MORNING YOU HIT SNOOZE WITHOUT LOOKING

THE DAY THAT TESTS IT.

●●●○○

Your alarm goes off and your hand reaches for the nightstand top without your eyes open yet.

How it works

Tests: NIGHTSTAND LEFT

It held if: Your hand finds the lamp switch or the clock in the same five items every time, nothing else in the way.

If it did not: If your hand knocked into a glass, a charger cable, or a sixth item you did not expect, the top has drifted past five. Draw PRA-003.

THE NIGHT YOUR PARTNER IS SICK AND NEEDS MEDICATION IN THE DARK

THE DAY THAT TESTS IT.

●●●○○

Your partner wakes at 2 a.m. needing their medication, and you are the one reaching into their nightstand drawer in the dark.

How it works

Tests: NIGHTSTAND RIGHT

It held if: The medication is capped, in date, and easy to find because you both agreed on the cord and the count, even though the rest of the drawer stayed theirs.

If it did not: If you had to hunt or the cap was already off, the one exception this side allows, checking medication together, has not happened in a while. Draw PRA-005.

THE MORNING YOU'RE ALREADY LATE AND EMPTYING YOUR POCKETS

THE DAY THAT TESTS IT.

●●●○○

You are rushing out the door and empty last night's pockets onto the dresser on your way past.

How it works

Tests: DRESSER TOP

It held if: Everything lands inside the valet tray in one motion because the tray still has room, and the wood around it stays bare.

If it did not: If something landed on the bare wood beside the tray because it was already full, the tray needs thinning, not a bigger tray. Draw PRA-007.

THE DAY LAUNDRY COMES BACK AND YOU'RE TIRED

THE DAY THAT TESTS IT.

●●●○○

A full laundry basket comes back up to the bedroom at the end of a long day, and putting it away is the last thing you want to do.

How it works

Tests: DRESSER DRAWERS

It held if: Every drawer still has a hand's width of space waiting, so folding it in takes ten minutes and nothing gets pressed down.

If it did not: If a drawer needed a shove to close, the overflow was never pulled the last time this happened. Draw PRA-009.

EventPRE-006

THE MORNING YOU NEED SOMETHING SPECIFIC IN A HURRY

THE DAY THAT TESTS IT.

●●●○○

You need one specific jacket for an event this morning and you are already running behind.

How it works

Tests: PRIMARY CLOSET

It held if: You can slide two fingers along the rod straight to it because everything hangs at the same depth, grouped by type and shade.

If it did not: If you had to fight through a packed rod to find it, one in one out has stopped happening. Draw PRA-012.
