Nursery micro zone

The Feeding Station

Puts a clean assembled bottle or a full set of pump parts into your hands at 2 a.m. without a single decision.

One session: 30-45 min. most of it in Straighten, splitting clean from used

What done looks like

One bin of clean bottles assembled with teats and collars on, a second bin of used parts waiting, a drying rack standing empty, the formula scoop inside the tin with the lid shut, and a stack of burp cloths you can grab without looking.

The six passes, in order

Work them in this order. Sorting after you have arranged things means arranging things you were about to remove.

1. Sort

Decide what stays. Everything else leaves the zone now.

Line up every bottle, teat, valve, membrane, and pump part on the surface at once. Teats gone cloudy or split at the slit go in the bin rather than back in the drawer, and so does every part belonging to a pump or bottle brand you have stopped using.

2. Straighten

Give what stays a home, placed where the hand actually reaches.

Two bins in obviously different colors, one for clean and ready, one for used and waiting. Assemble bottles fully as they come out of the sterilizer, teat and collar on, so the middle of the night is a grab rather than a hunt for a matching collar.

3. Shine

Clean it, and use the cleaning to inspect what you cannot see when it is full.

Wash and sterilize on the schedule your kit calls for, then let parts air dry completely before they go into the clean bin, because a damp valve in a closed bin is where mold starts. Descale the kettle or sterilizer monthly and wipe the surface under the drying rack where drips collect.

4. Safety

Make the zone safe for everybody who uses it, including the shortest person.

Kettles, bottle warmers, and sterilizers sit at roughly the same height as the changing pad, so a pulled cord brings scalding water down at child height. Loop every cable short and run it behind the appliance, and keep the kettle and the water jug well clear of the socket and the monitor plug so nothing wet stands next to anything live.

5. Standardize

Write down the best way you know today, so it survives you forgetting.

Write the formula scoop-to-water numbers you actually use on a card taped above the station, so a grandparent or a night visitor mixes it right the first time. A standard is the best way you know today, written down.

6. Sustain

Attach the reset to something that already happens, so it keeps itself.

When the kitchen light goes off for the night, the used bin goes down to be washed and the clean bin comes back stocked to four assembled bottles.

The bottle she rejected

You now own three brands, because the first was refused and everybody swore the second one worked for them. The rule: give a new teat or bottle three honest feeds across a week, offered when your baby is calm and hungry rather than already crying, and then decide. If it fails that test, the whole system leaves the house, box and spares included. Keeping five brands on the shelf means washing, sterilizing, storing, and matching parts for five systems in order to use one, and every one of those steps happens at 2 a.m.

Check these before you start

Cleaning it properly

A damp valve in a closed bin is where mold starts, so nothing goes away wet. Clean top to bottom, from the appliances down to the surface under the drying rack, and dry everything fully before it lands in the clean bin.

Inspect as you clean. Cleaning is the only time you see the zone empty, so use it.

The standard that keeps it fixed

Clean and ready never shares a bin with used and waiting.

Reset trigger. when the kitchen light goes off for the night

Have us run the Nursery with you

The method above is complete and free, and most people can work The Feeding Station from it in a single session. Some zones fight back, and it is usually because the real problem sits somewhere else in the room. If that is where you are, a one hour virtual consult is 250 dollars: we find the function, the friction and the root cause together, and you keep a written standard for the space.
