Living Room
The living room belongs to everybody, which is why nobody puts anything away in it. Six people can pass through in an evening and each leave one object behind, and by Sunday the sofa has a laundry pile and the coffee table has four mugs. Start with the floor and the coffee table, because those two are what you see from the doorway, and a room that looks reset from the doorway is a room people keep resetting.
The 6 micro zones, in working order
A micro zone is one session, not a whole day. Finish one before you start the next.
- The Sofa and Seating (30-45 min)
Somewhere every person in the house can sit down without first moving something. - The Coffee Table (15-30 min)
A small shared surface for whatever is happening right now, and nothing that is not. - The Media Center (45-75 min)
Keep the television, sound and consoles working, cool and cabled so a fault is findable. - The Bookshelves and Display (45-75 min)
Hold the books you will genuinely open again, and a small number of objects you actually want to look at. - The Side Tables and Lighting (15-30 min)
Put a light, a drink and one or two personal things within reach of the chair without turning the table into a nightstand. - The Floor and Circulation Path (15-30 min)
Let anyone cross this room in the dark, carrying something, without touching anything.
For this room
- {'label': 'Where to start', 'text': "Do the Floor and Circulation Path first, with a laundry basket in your hand. Everything on the floor rides the basket out, and you get an honest look at how much of this room's mess is shoes, school bags and toys from other rooms just visiting."}
- {'label': 'Cleaning note', 'text': 'Lift every seat cushion before you vacuum, not after. The seams hold crumbs, coins, hair clips and the remote you replaced last month, and the upholstery tool only reaches what you have already exposed.'}
- {'label': 'The trap', 'text': 'This room fails by donation, not by neglect. Each person drops one thing and considers the room fine, so no single household member ever sees a mess they caused. Standards here have to be visible from the sofa, which means a throw basket with a label on it and a coffee table tray you can see is overflowing from across the room.'}
