Room

Family Room

The family room carries more jobs than any other room in the house. Screens, floor play, board games, blankets, charging, and craft all compete for the same few square meters, until nobody can find a controller, a glue stick, or the second die. Start with the media zone, because its cables run under and behind everything else, and the rest of the room gets easier to think about once they are sorted.

The 6 micro zones, in working order

A micro zone is one session, not a whole day. Finish one before you start the next.

  1. The Primary Media Zone (45-75 min)
Hold the television, consoles, and controllers so anyone in the house can start watching or playing without hunting for a remote.
  2. The Toy and Play Zone (60-90 min)
Hold the toys that are in active rotation, at a height and in a form where a child can put them away without an adult.
  3. The Board Game and Puzzle Zone (30-45 min)
Store games and puzzles so that anything you pull off the shelf is complete and playable tonight.
  4. The Blanket and Comfort Zone (15-30 min)
Hold the throws and floor cushions people actually reach for while watching or reading, in a container that tells the truth about how many there are.
  5. The Charging and Device Zone (30-45 min)
Charge the household's phones, tablets, controllers, and headphones in one place, on a surface that can take the heat.
  6. The Craft and Activity Zone (45-75 min)
Hold craft supplies grouped by activity so a project can start in one motion and the surface can be cleared for dinner just as fast.
